Welcome to Odense

 |
Dear guests and participants of the 9th International Symposium on Sympathetic Surgery
It is with the greatest of pleasure that I, as Mayor of the city of Odense, welcome you to the ISSS Conference in Odense.
While in Odense, I hope that you will take the opportunity to see more of our city. Odense is known as the city for cyclists with a total of 510 km of bicycle paths and state-of-the-art facilities for cyclists. Our efforts in this field have won international acclaim and we were proud to be chosen to present our results and visions at the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai last year. While you are here, why not make time for a bicycle trip to see the full scope of what a city for cyclists can offer first hand?
Odense is a dynamic city that combines the metropolitan pulse with village charm - there is something here for every palate and all temperaments. We are the proud home town of Hans Christian Andersen. Do not forget to visit his birthplace and the adjacent museum and information center that have been established there in his honor, as well as the quaint historical museum in his childhood home. Take a stroll through the charming center of the city and enjoy the many parks and squares where you will find varied activities and also room for peaceful contemplation in beautiful surroundings.
Enjoy the many experiences that await you in Odense.
Anker Boye, Mayor of the City of Odense |

About Odense

 |
The city in the heart of Denmark - always worth a visit
Odense has a bit of everything: big city life and diversity, but also a charming atmosphere and many green breathing holes right in the middle of the city. The river flowing through the city connects the parks and offers unique opportunities to combine city life with relaxation in beautiful green oases.
Odense has a wide and diverse shopping environment. The everyday shops line the pedestrian streets, while the small side streets and alleys are home to tempting specialist shops with international labels and leading Danish Design brands.
This is also where you will find the relaxing café lifestyle with its charming al fresco ambience. The island of Fyn is known as “the Garden of Denmark” on account of its fertile soil. This gives rise to a wealth of seasonal produce and specialities, which you can enjoy in Odense’s numerous and varied cafés and restaurants. www.visitodense.com |

To play is to live
In Odense, we say that to play is to live. And this is not just something we say, but also something we do. We are particularly focused on learning through experience and play – both for the people of Odense and our many visitors. Odense’s commitment to play has roots reaching back to Hans Christian Andersen. Being the famous storytellers hometown, his life and writings have left a distinctive imprint on the city. There are many fascinating and instructive Andersen experiences for large and small alike. To find out more about Odense and the cultural sights and attractions the city offers: www.visitodense.com
Culture and music A wide selection of museums are available - all located near the city centre. Brandts Klædefabrik with its very special atmosphere made up of shops, cafés, restaurants, a cinema, a library and art museums side by side is well worth a visit. Brandts houses attractions such as the Art Gallery, which is one of the largest exhibition venues in Scandinavia, regularly hosting collections of paintings, applied art, design, architecture and video art. A visit to the Hans Christian Andersen Museum with the authors personal belongings is very educational, as is a trip to The Funen Village where you can visit Denmark in ages past.
Funen is also well known for its large share of castles and manors. Egeskov Castle from 1554 is one of the islands most visited attractions, situated only a half hour drive form Odense. Although the castle is privately owned, you can visit large parts of the castle itself, and of course enjoy the wonderful park with all the different types of gardens.
Wonderful delights for children
Bring the family to Odense and explore the city’s exciting and varied activities. Odense Zoo is a modern and beautiful zoo, where you can see northern Europes biggest aviary in which pelicans and flamingos fly freely. You can also experience the life of a train driver at The Danish Railway Museum. The Tinderbox Culture Centre for Children is a fairytale museum where children are inspired by the fairytales of Hans Christian Andersons, and where they can play in a fairytale landscape.
