Practical information for Christmas
market guests

Here you will find answers to your questions about the Hans Christian Andersen Christmas Market.

History of the Hans Christian Andersen Christmas Market

The idea for the Hans Christian Andersen Christmas Market was first formed by a series of people with connection to Odense’s active cultural and shop interests led primarily by actor Torben Iversen. Also represented in the group were the Municipality’s Cultural Department, Odense City Museums and the Municipality’s Parks and Roads Department.

A grant application sent to the H.C. Andersen 2005 Fund was met with a sum that ensured that the Christmas market would be held in 2004 and 2005 and Odense City Museums undertook the job of organising the event.

Since 2006 the Hans Christian Andersen Christmas Market has been organised by EventHouse – a part of Odense Municipality.

Market booths

The Hans Christian Andersen Christmas Market welcomes you to a wealth of shopping opportunities. In the narrow streets and small squares you will find a vegetable market and booths with a wide range of goods.

Everything from foodstuffs, woollen products, wickerwork, arts and crafts to trendy Christmas ornaments and traditional elves will be yours for the finding. Of course you can also warm yourself up with a hot glass of glögg (Danish version of the German Glühwein), enjoy freshly baked waffles, pancakes and other treats.

Experience the old part of the city

The Hans Christian Andersen Christmas Market is held in the oldest quarter in the city which is definitely worth a visit.

Among other things this is where you find the Hans Christian Andersen Museum, The Funen Graphics Workshop and the Children’s Cultural House – The Tinderbox.
