The Old Quarter

The old quarter is filled with small colourful houses that create a charming atmosphere and a beautiful backdrop for the Hans Christian Andersen Christmas Market. The quarter is the best preserved older part of Odense and is centered around Sortebrødre Torv (Blackfriars Square), colloquially known as Market Square. Today the quarter consists of the same buildings as in the day of Hans Christian Andersen and they give a unique perspective on what city life in the 1800s was like.

The famous poet grew up in the familiar yellow house situated centrally in Odense which today houses his museum. Today the quarter appears beautiful and idyllic but in Hans Christian Andersen's day it was characterised by poverty and dirty gutters.

Today the quarter is Odense's largest tourist attraction and houses, apart from the Hans Christian Andersen Museum, the children's cultural house, The Tinderbox, Odense Concerthall, Odense City Museum Moentergaarden and The Carl Nielsen Museum.

Hans Christian Andersen House

In the Hans Christian Andersen House you can visit the exhibitions on the poet's fantastic life and works and admire the beautifully decorated Christmas tree with ornaments like Andersen made them himself.

Hans Christian Andersen was very taken with the, for his day, relatively new Christmas tree and from his diary you can tell that he helped decorate many. During December you can see a Christmas tree decorated as it would have been in Hans Christian Andersen's days.
The tree will also be decorated with fish net, flags, stars and gifts. In the 1800s gifts were hung on the tree instead of being placed under it as today.

You can also see Queen Margrethe’s latest works: découpages and costumes created for the latest film version of the fairytale “The Wild Swans”. Read more here
