During the year some events stand out - either for their size, their importance or simply because for us, they have become a dear tradition.
This page attempts to list them so you don't miss any of them. The events are sorted by date.
Folk Festival17/4 - 20/4 The program for this year’s festival is ready. Once more we can present a lot of exciting music from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Ireland and England. Fairytale Run 1/5 The race is one of Denmark’s largest fun runs and it takes place Ascension Day with starting and finishing area around Odense Idrætspark.
Odense International Blues Festival 1/5 - 3/5 Odense International Blues Days offer local and international artists performing on/in a few of Odense’s minor/smaller charming music scenes. Iron Age Market17/5 – 18/5 The audience has the opportunity to go about 2000 years back in time and see the beautiful village populated again. About 100 market people will give an insight into that time’s everyday life.
Harbour Culture Festival 200829/5 – 1/6 Activities and entertainment within leisure and cultural life, sport, athletics and art.
Open by Night 4/6 Open by night in (the city’s) shops and museums with a lot of activities for children.
Carl Nielsen Violin Competition
31/5 – 9/6 International contest which takes place in Odense Concert Hall. The Funen Cattle Show13/6 – 15/6 Animals and agricultural machines – and lots of activities for children.
The Hans Christian Andersen Parade23/7 – 16/8 Excerpts from Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales performed by children. The parade performs 3 times daily in the “castle” by the Andersen Museum. Flower Festival13/8 – 16/8 Every year tens of thousands of flowers transform the city centre into Denmark’s largest flower arrangement. This year the festival is themed on interior decorating.
Hans Christian Andersen Festival Plays 23/7 – 16/8 A magical experience in the Funen Village. The festival play this year is a children’s musical based on the fairy tale The Tinderbox. Opera on Engen (the meadow)17/8 Odense Symphonic Orchestra invites you to spend an afternoon in the lovely meadow in Fruens Bøge listening to opera of international standards.
Odense International Film Festival 19/8 – 24/8 A string of pearls of both long documentaries and international short films, of which many often does not reach the other cinemas in the country. Day of the Fiord 14/9 Activities on both land, water and in the sky. Round the Fjord.
5/9 The shops and museums stay open until late. A lot of activities all around the city. Hans Christian Andersen Marathon
21/9 An international race with participants from all around the world.
Music Harvest 29/10 – 1/11 Since the first Music Harvest in 1985, the festival has presented contemporary music from the USA, the former USSR, Great Britain, Germany, Hungary, Finland, Poland, Lithuania the Baltic countries and Denmark.
Christmas fair at Møntergården29/11 – 30/11 and 6/12 – 7/12 The first two weekends in December, the Hans Christian Andersen Christmas Fair is held in Odense, and in connection with that the Møntergård welcomes you to a historic Christmas. Here you can experience the Christmas spirit as in a Danish market town in the1800s.
Hans Christian Andersen Christmas Market29/11 – 30/11 and 6/12 – 7/12 In the old part of town near Hans Christian Andersen’s house in Odense, the historic Christmas fair is held at the end of November and the first weekend of December. The Christmas fair is based on the period of Hans Christian Andersen and of course the famous characters from his fairytales. Christmas at the Funen Village 14/12 The Funen Village welcomes you to a traditional Christmas event. The village will be shrouded in the aroma of food and the smoke from the wood stoves, and mother will prepare samples of the Christmas food. All guests are invited to taste the Christmas food, cakes, freshly pressed apple juice as well as warm and cold homemade beer.
