The fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen was born in Odense in 1805. When he was 14 he decided to try his luck at the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen. For three years he was engaged here without pay after which he received funding to finish his studies. After finishing his studies in 1829 the young cand.phil. dedicated himself to writing. In Odense you can visit his birthhouse and museum, take a walk in his footsteps and see some of the localities that meant something to him including his childhood home. Also the city centre is full of sculptures and many of them depict scenes and characters from Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales
