Odense gets it's first Michelin Star

This week, Restaurant ARO in Odense received its first Michelin star. This means that Odense – and Fyn in particular – is now home to its first Michelin-starred restaurant. It is a gastronomic seal of approval that highlights the cultural revival the city has undergone in recent years.

Odense makes its mark on the international culinary map with its first Michelin-starred restaurant

In addition to ARO, the Michelin Guide also highlights the Odense restaurants Vår and Pasfall as recommended dining experiences.

As part of an ambitious urban development strategy, Odense has evolved into a modern, revitalised city for both domestic and international visitors, offering everything that entails in terms of culture, gastronomy and extraordinary attractions. Most recently, gastronomy has taken centre stage, with the Michelin Guide awarding a star to Restaurant ARO. One of the things Michelin particularly praises is the restaurant’s unusual location in an industrial district, housed in a former machine factory, as well as the combination of rustic surroundings and refined dining. In many ways, this reflects how Odense’s food scene has spread across the city in recent years.

We are very proud that the prestigious Michelin Guide has awarded a star to Restaurant ARO in Odense. Urban development has accelerated over the past 10 years and transformed Odense into an attractive cultural destination with a food scene that ranges from street food to fine dining. ARO’s Michelin star is richly deserved in every way. We are delighted that this will hopefully help draw attention to the culinary standouts that Odense and Fyn have been home to for many years.Peter Rahbæk Juel

When the Nordic Michelin Guide was announced on Monday 12 June, 43 stars were awarded to 31 Danish restaurants. Six of these restaurants had not previously held Michelin stars – including Restaurant ARO in Odense. The number of international food tourists in Denmark has risen by 50 per cent since 2017, according to a not-yet-published report from VisitDenmark based on the 2022 Tourist Survey. There were 1.9 million international food tourists in 2022, accounting for around one in three international visitors.

Odense’s newly gained status as a must-visit cultural destination was also underlined earlier this year by record tourism figures and recommendations from the influential American fashion magazine Vogue and The New York Times, which placed Odense in an impressive 28th place on its list of 52 places to visit in 2023.
