The sculpture has become one of the harbour's most distinctive landmarks and an example of how an artist's vision can take on a life of its own, even when events unfold differently than originally intended.

A Grand Vision for H.C. Andersen

The story began in 2005, during celebrations marking the 200th anniversary of H.C. Andersen's birth. Jens Galschiøt was working on the ambitious art project The Storyteller's Fountain, conceived as a monument to the author and the imaginative universe of his fairy tales. At the heart of the project was a large sculpture of H.C. Andersen surrounded by characters and stories from his works.

As a preview of the planned monument, the more than three-metre-tall sculpture was installed on Flakhaven, the square in front of Odense City Hall, where residents and visitors could experience it up close.

An Artist Who Does Things Differently

Jens Galschiøt is known for creating art that sparks debate and makes people stop and think. When The Storyteller's Fountain was never realised in its full form, he chose a highly unconventional way to bring the project to a close.

In 2011, he organised a large public art event through the streets of Odense. The sculpture was transported through the city on a wagon pulled by six black Friesian horses, accompanied by musicians, actress Vigga Bro and thousands of participants. The procession ended at the harbour, where H.C. Andersen was ceremonially lowered into the water before a large audience.

H.C. Andersen Finds a New Home

What began as an artistic statement developed into a new chapter in the sculpture's story. Rather than being forgotten, H.C. Andersen remained in the harbour, where he has since looked out from the water as one of Odense's most unusual sights. Here, art, history and harbour life come together in a way found nowhere else in the city.

For visitors to Odense Harbour, the sculpture offers a different perspective on H.C. Andersen. While many of the city's other monuments celebrate the world-famous author in a traditional manner, Jens Galschiøt's work presents a more playful and unconventional interpretation.
