Kunstmuseum Brandts has just achieved Green Attraction certification, which means that all classic museums and attractions in Odense Municipality are now environmentally certified.

This marks an important milestone in the city’s efforts to promote sustainability and reduce the environmental impact of the cultural sector.

The Green Attraction certification, which is aimed at attractions such as museums and zoos, sets requirements for areas including energy and water consumption, waste sorting and sustainable operations in general. Kunstmuseum Brandts follows in the footsteps of several of the city’s other institutions, which have already achieved the certification.

Destination Fyn has worked extremely hard for several years to provide knowledge, skills development and networks within sustainability – and not least to support our members’ work with certifications. We are therefore proud of this green news for Odense as a tourism destination. It underlines that we are working responsibly to ensure that Funen, both now and in the future, can remain a scenic destination with experiences that make an impression while leaving a positive footprint.Tue Kempf

Odense as a sustainable destination

With Kunstmuseum Brandts’ recent certification, Odense can now proudly say that all of the municipality’s classic cultural institutions and attractions are certified as Green Attractions. In addition to Kunstmuseum Brandts, Odense Zoo, Museum TID, H.C. Andersen’s House, The Funen Village, the Danish Railway Museum and the Carl Nielsen Museum also hold the certification.

In a green city like Odense, it is important that we take care of our nature. With our field of work at the Danish Railway Museum, we are deeply engaged in the green transition – both in our organisation and in our public communication. The importance of public transport for the green transition therefore has its own exhibition at the museum, where we seek to provide insight into the carbon footprint of different forms of transport over time – and what our choices as consumers can change. On behalf of the city and the industry, it is welcome news that, within the tourism sector, we can now present certifications across the board.Jens Toftgaard

Green Attraction currently only covers classic museums and attractions, which means that several of the city’s other cultural institutions are not eligible for the certification.

However, this does not mean that environmental impact is not being actively addressed elsewhere. For example, Odense Åfart has introduced solar-powered electric boats and solar panels on the boats’ roofs, while Odense Theatre has developed a sustainability policy focusing on both social and environmental responsibility.

Several other sustainability certifications

Other sectors and businesses in the municipality are also well represented when it comes to other environmental certifications. This includes several of the city’s major hotels and conference centres, which have achieved the international ecolabel Green Key or have been awarded the Nordic Swan Ecolabel. Most recently, Nature Energy Park, which offers event and meeting facilities by Odense Station, received Green Key certification.

In addition, Odense Municipality’s Growth and Tourism department and Destination Fyn are certified under Green Tourism Organization and actively work with sustainability in their day-to-day operations.
