The Pen – a Christmas ballet about Hans Christian Andersen
In this year's Christmas performance, we follow a young, poor poet who leaves home with a dream of becoming famous. Along the way, he finds inspiration for the fairy tales that will later make Hans Christian Andersen known far beyond Denmark.
Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales told through dance
The performance follows the poet's journey from his first steps out into the world to the point when both he and his stories gain recognition.
More than 100 students from Friskolen for Scenekunst take to the stage to tell the story through contemporary dance, classical ballet, musical theatre dance and song. Along the way, the audience will encounter a number of Hans Christian Andersen's well-known fairy tales, while the story explores the dreams and imagination that drive the young poet forward.
The Pen is also a story about daring to pursue an idea without knowing where it might lead. Hans Christian Andersen's journey from dream to reality provides the setting for a Christmas performance for both children and adults.
Christmas ballet at Odense City Hall
The Pen will be performed at Odense City Hall from 8 to 16 December 2026. The performance lasts approximately 60 minutes and is suitable for all ages.
