Experience EKKO – a luminous sculpture in the spirit of H.C. Andersen
Along the path at Ny Vestergade in Odense, the art installation EKKO rises as a sensory reflection on life, death, and eternal recurrence. The work was created to mark the 150th anniversary of H.C. Andersen’s death.
A sculptural portal of light and contemplation
As part of Andersen Forever – Odense’s tribute to the 150th anniversary of H.C. Andersen’s death – you can experience EKKO, an installation by Chaos Engine Art Studio and visual artist Magnus Fuhr. The work consists of twenty luminous sculptures forming a nine-metre-long and three-metre-high portal along the path near the Ny Vestergade bridge. The repeated and staggered shapes create a visual echo that invites reflection on the cycle of life and the things that return again and again.
Light and shadow in harmony
By day, EKKO appears as a transparent sculpture, with daylight filtering through its layered forms. As darkness falls, the installation’s dynamic lighting comes to life, sending cascades of white light through the sculptures. The result is a living play of light and shadow that evokes thoughts of memory and longing – and how these emotions continue to live within us.
H.C. Andersen’s themes reimagined
EKKO draws inspiration from H.C. Andersen’s reflections on life and death – and on how stories can make us immortal. The installation symbolises how memories and narratives live on, even after death. It is part of Andersen Forever, where Odense celebrates the writer’s legacy through art and culture that explore existential themes.
Getting there – and taking it all in
