Oak processionary moth in Odense – what visitors need to know

You can safely visit Odense, even though the oak processionary moth has been found in the city. The caterpillars are mainly in south-east Odense and a few other places. Follow local signs near parks, nature areas and oak trees. Keep away from caterpillars and nests.

Can you still visit Odense?

Yes. Odense is still a safe city to visit for both visitors and locals. Most attractions, museums, restaurants, hotels, shopping areas and experiences in the city can be visited as usual.

The oak processionary moth has been found in Odense, but this does not mean that the whole city is affected. The caterpillars are mainly found in the south-eastern part of the city and in just a few other places. Areas where you should be particularly careful are marked with signs.

Where should you be careful?

You should be especially careful in areas with oak trees. The caterpillars and their nests may be found on the trunk, branches or near the tree.

If Odense Municipality has put up signs or advises against using a path or entering an area, choose another route.

You can see the current status and a map of reported sightings on Odense Municipality’s website.

What is the oak processionary moth?

The oak processionary moth is a caterpillar that lives in oak trees. It is sometimes referred to as the “caterpillar from hell” because its tiny hairs can cause itching, rashes and irritation to the eyes or airways if you come into contact with them.

The name may sound dramatic, but for most people it is simply a matter of taking ordinary precautions: keep your distance, do not touch caterpillars or nests, and follow the municipality’s instructions.

Advice for visitors

  • Follow the signs in parks, green areas and along paths.
  • Keep your distance from caterpillars, nests and affected oak trees.
  • Do not touch the caterpillars – even if they appear to be dead.
  • Be extra careful if you are visiting with children or a dog.
  • Choose another route if the municipality advises against entering an area.

If you have come into contact with the caterpillar’s hairs

If the caterpillar’s hairs get on your skin, carefully rinse your body with water and then wash thoroughly. Clothes that may have come into contact with the hairs should be washed at a minimum of 60°C.

Contact a doctor if you experience severe symptoms. Seek medical help immediately if you have difficulty breathing or swelling of the face or throat.
