Carl Nielsen Camino: Shaped by Funen – inspired by the world

Through Odense’s idyllic streets, deep green forests, along gently flowing streams and past the thatched cottage where the world-famous composer grew up. On 1 September, a 120-kilometre audio walk from Odense to Faaborg will open, taking walkers along a beautiful route across Funen.

The Carl Nielsen Camino is a brand-new audio walk on Funen that celebrates the world-famous composer. The camino is 120 kilometres long and divided into 12 routes from Odense to Faaborg. It leads walkers from the award-winning Carl Nielsen Museum in the heart of Odense to the composer’s childhood home in central Funen, telling the full story of Denmark’s most famous composer.

The Carl Nielsen Camino is a gift to Funen and brings together two of our greatest attractions in the best possible way: international culture and magnificent nature. Local residents and our many visitors can look forward to experiencing both in abundance on this audio walk, which is a major asset for tourism on Funen.Peter Rahbæk Juel

The audio walk offers memorable experiences on Funen

From deep forests to open fields, from cosy little villages to lively urban scenes. On the audio walk, you come closer to Carl Nielsen and his Funen roots through stories and reinterpretations of his music. Local voices contribute their own stories, naturally woven into the story of a multifaceted composer who managed to be both deeply rooted in Funen and international at the same time. The music, the stories, the local voices, nature and the walking experience come together in the Carl Nielsen Camino as one coherent work that everyone can see themselves reflected in.

The camino has become sensory, surprising and thought-provoking – just like Carl Nielsen himself. It will be the finest bridge from the new Carl Nielsen Museum in Odense to his childhood home in central Funen.Ida-Marie Vorre

Audio work four years in the making

The extensive audio work, which can be experienced along the 120-kilometre route, has been more than four years in the making, and it is with great joy that the doors to Funen’s nature, stories and music can finally be opened.

I am very honoured that so many people have contributed to the Carl Nielsen Camino. Local people have shared the most moving stories with me, and landowners have given permission for walkers to pass through their forests, bogs and fields. It has been a huge journey for me to delve into Carl Nielsen’s life and repertoire and unfold it in the audio works. I am very proud of the result and truly hope that many people will walk the Carl Nielsen Camino and discover the treasure we have here on Funen.Tine Louise Kortermand

Artistic director of the Carl Nielsen Camino

The official opening will take place on 1 September at 14:00 with a festive celebration at Polymeren in Årslev, featuring choir singing, music and speeches.
