Fish Ladder in Munke Mose

Saabye’s Rapids is one of the places in Munke Mose where you can get right up close to the River Odense. Here, the water flows through a fish passage designed to improve conditions for species such as sea trout and river lamprey. The rapids also make an interesting stop on a walk through the park, just a few minutes from the city centre.

Free passage through the River Odense

Saabye’s Rapids was established in 2008 to make it easier for fish and other aquatic animals to move through the River Odense. The previous passage was difficult for species such as the river lamprey to navigate, and the new rapids created a more natural connection through the river system.

Today, the water flows over stones and a series of small drops that fish can pass through. If you are lucky, you may spot a sea trout in the water, while the area around the river also attracts birds such as grey herons and dippers.

A place to get close to the water

Saabye’s Rapids was not designed with fish alone in mind. Wide steps lead down towards the river, giving you a place to sit close to the water and watch life along the banks.

This makes the area a natural stop if you are walking through Munke Mose or following the paths along the River Odense. Here, park, city and nature come together in one small area, while the rapids also show how the river remains an important part of life in central Odense.

Who was Saabye?

The rapids are named after Svend Saabye, who grew up in Odense and was an artist, writer, angler and committed conservationist. Rivers, fishing and nature played an important role in both his life and his work, and for many years he was involved in efforts to protect Danish waterways and their fish.
