Explore the Romantic Garden

The 15-hectare garden features winding paths, lawns and small islands connected by a canal system extending for approximately two kilometres. Along the way, you can see the historic garden pavilions Tankefuld and Sommerlyst, both of which remain from the original garden.

The circular walk through the garden is approximately three kilometres long and takes around an hour. You can, of course, explore at your own pace and stop for breaks along the way. There are benches and designated picnic areas throughout the garden, and visitors are welcome to bring their own food. Dogs are also welcome but must be kept on a lead.

A garden with more than 200 years of history

The Romantic Garden was created by Johan von Bülow between 1793 and his death in 1828. It is considered one of Denmark’s earliest Romantic landscape gardens and was inspired by contemporary European garden design.

Johan von Bülow devoted considerable attention to shaping the landscape. The site was drained and levelled, canals were dug, and paths and viewpoints were created. Poplars, willows, birches, conifers and fruit trees were also planted throughout the garden.

The young artist C.W. Eckersberg stayed at Sanderumgaard in the summer of 1806 and painted several scenes of the newly established garden. Today, these paintings help document the garden’s appearance and Johan von Bülow’s vision for its design.

Practical information for your visit

The garden has a car park, toilets, an information centre and vending machines offering coffee, tea and soft drinks. Wheelchair users can access the main paths, but bridges, boardwalks and smaller paths may be difficult to navigate. A route for wheelchair users and visitors with limited mobility is marked in the brochure available at the entrance.
