Buildings with history
Odense celebrated its 1000th anniversary in 1988 and in many places in the city centre you can still see houses with stories. Medieval buildings stand side by side with houses from the last few centuries, many of which have played a role in the city's development.


Odense City Hall
The Town Hall, which owes its Italian-Gothic lines to the two architects Herholdt and Lendorf, was built in the 1880's.

The Charity School - historical building
The little school for poor children, which Hans Christian Andersen attended when he lived here, is in Paaskestræde. The building is half-timbered.

Odense Prison - historical building
When the house was inaugurated in 1752 it was known as Odense "Punishment and Correction" Facility. It's function was to discipline local beggars.

Hans C. Andersen's Childhood Home
In Andersen's Childhood Home you can see an exhibition about the poet's childhood in Odense as well as a courtyard with plants, he has described in his works.

The Old Odense Train Station
The old trainstation functioned as such from 1914 until the end of the 1990s. On the building you can see many of the hallmarks of neo-baroque architecture.

Odense Convent of Noble Maidens
In 1716 Karen Brahe founded a convent for unmarried women of Danish nobility. The convent functioned as such until 1972.

Frederik's Bridge
Frederiksbroen (Frederik's Bridge), across the river, Odense Å, was Denmark's first cast iron road bridge. It was built in 1844.

Sct. Hans Church
Sct. Hans Church is a Knights Hospitaller monastery church in red stone in the middle of Odense center, close to Kongens Have and Odense Castle.
