Step into the Fairytales

Nowhere in the world will you come closer to Hans Christian Andersen than in Odense. At the museum, you can explore original paper cuttings, drawings and objects from the author's life, while sound, light, art and architecture bring his stories to life around you.

The exhibition is designed as a journey through both Andersen's life and his literary universe. Rather than a traditional museum filled with information panels, visitors move through atmospheric spaces where fairytales, imagination and reality merge, offering new perspectives on stories many already know by heart.

Experience Award-Winning Architecture

Designed by renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, the museum opened in 2021. Much of the building is located below ground and surrounded by gardens inspired by Andersen's universe. Architecture, landscape and exhibitions are conceived as one unified experience, where the surroundings are just as important as the objects on display.

Visit Hans Christian Andersen's Birthplace

As part of your visit, you can also explore the small yellow house in Hans Jensens Stræde, where Hans Christian Andersen was born in 1805. The exhibition tells the story of Andersen's family and of Odense as it looked during the writer's earliest years.

H.C. Andersen's Garden

Between the museum buildings lies H.C. Andersen's Garden, inspired by Andersen's fairytales and his unique view of nature and imagination. The garden is a peaceful green retreat in the heart of the city and an attraction in its own right.
